Rat and mouse poison is available free of charge to all R.M. residents. Bait stations are also available for a fee of $30.00. These items are available at the R.M. Shop or through our Pest Control Officer.
Users are responsible for record-keeping, environmental protection measures and compliance with all label and EUR restrictions. Environmental protection measures include in-burrow bait placement and carcass removal to limit the likelihood of non-target impacts. A pre-sale species at risk assessment is conducted for all land locations where strychnine use is planned. Users must follow the risk mitigation measures prescribed in the pre-sale species at risk assessment for each land location. All records must be returned to the RM office and will be shared with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, which will provide them to Health Canada’s Pesticides Regulatory Directorate.
Strychnine users must complete mandatory online training and adhere to the product label.
Required Training
One part of the Strychnine Stewardship Program is the completion of online-only training.
After completing the training in full, you will be able to download a certificate of completion. Please retain this for your records and bring it to your RM office.
For producers, two (2) business days after completing the training, your municipality will be able to confirm the completion of your training. There are other eligibility requirements beyond the training that you must complete prior to accessing strychnine. Please see the Saskatchewan Strychnine Stewardship Guidelines or Alberta’s Richardson’s Ground Squirrel Control website for further details.
Please wait at least two business days after completing the training before contacting your municipality to begin the process of accessing strychnine.
Training Schedule
Access to the Strychnine Stewardship Training for the 2026 season is available from May 4 to September 1, 2026.
After completing the 90-minute online training program, users are required to complete a mandatory Treatment Plan and Declaration Form to become a certified strychnine user.

A strychnine post sign is to be posted when strychnine baiting is in progress.
