RM of Snipe Lake Assessment and Taxation 2025

The RM of Snipe Lake met in July to approve the 2025 budget and set future priorities.

The Province has defined three property classes for municipal taxation: Agriculture (AGR), Residential (RES), and Commercial (COMM). The 2025 property reassessment brought notable shifts among these classes. AGR assessments rose significantly, RES saw a slight decline, and COMM experienced a modest increase.

Historically, Commercial properties have carried a greater portion of the municipal tax load. To address this imbalance, Council took deliberate steps to reduce the RM’s reliance on the COMM class. At the same time, Council aimed to maintain fair taxation for the AGR sector, ensuring it did not bear the burden of shifting assessment values.

To support this goal, Council reduced overall taxation revenue by approximately $500,000.

This was accomplished by lowering the general mill rate from 12 mills to 10 mills, and adjusting mill rate factors as follows:

·       AGR was reduced from 0.3225 to 0.3000

·       RES remained unchanged

·       COMM was reduced from 2.2500 to 2.0000

As a result of these combined changes—property reassessment, mill rate factor adjustments, and a lower mill rate—tax bill impacts will vary across property types.  For further information, please contact the RM Office.
